The concept of FieldRunners, like most tower defense games, is for enemies to spawn at one end of the map in order to reach the other end of the map. The player’s role is to create towers to stop the enemy from reaching their goal. Read on for more information on this mini in our mini review. Created in 2009 by Sub Atomic Studios, Fieldrunners has recently seen new life with its inclusion in the release of content for PlayStation Plus, bringing this great mini to the PlayStation masses. As with most mini's the concept is simple and the gameplay short but enjoyable.
The game starts you off with a small amount of coins and 10 seconds to start building your towers. When you defeat an enemy, you receive more coins, which then allows you to build or upgrade your towers. The tower weapons include machinegun turrets, lightning towers, missile launchers, and goo guns that slow down enemy units, making them more susceptible to repeat barrages by the other towers. The mortar tower offers extended range attacks while the flamethrower burns up units for lasting damage. The laser tower rips through the entire map, allowing you to set up some pretty deadly corridors. The ice tower is the advanced goo tower, which slows multiple enemies.
These towers can be upgraded multiple times to increase their effectiveness. The towers are also typically better suited for certain types of enemies. The guns work great on grunts. Missiles and lightning are good against aerial units. The balancing of the defenses in Fieldrunners is very well done and the newly added towers do not disrupt the game. Fieldrunners includes three play modes: classic, extended, and endless. Classic and extended dish out known quantities of enemies while endless is exactly what it sounds like an unending horde.
Fieldrunners is free if you have Playstation Plus and $8.45AUD if you don't.
